Smoky & Mystic Sage in 2004Mystic Sage SMR#3353 ( Wakara's Gold SMR#2374 x Sulphur's Smoky SMR#2025)
Date: 01/30/2007
Mystic Sage was raised as a "semi-orphan".
Helena slept out in the stall with them for 3 months straight, and fed him every 2 hours or less, 24/7! Smoky refused to abandon her baby, even though she could not nurse and someone else's milk was flowing through him (this breed's intact instincts are truly amazing). Smoky spent most of her time nuzzling and grooming him - and Helena's hair, whenever Helena tried to get some sleep, between feedings and milking other mares.
(Helena says, "Mare spit sure makes strange looking styling mousse!")
Sage having "lunch" when he was about 4 months
Date: 07/16/2007
Helena said not to post this, because she was wearing her "good" hat. So, S-h-h-h-h-h!
When the spirit within is this beautiful, who cares about the wear on the wardrobe.
He was foaled in the year of the "Mystic Sage" (sometimes called shawman's sage, a plant rarely seen this far north out of old Mexico) and it sure seems to fit him. It was very "mystical" that he survived. One cold night, at three days of age, we thought he was dead. Helena could not find a pulse or respiration. She held him, and told him it was alright, that if he was ready to go, she would under stand, but, if he had things here left to do, she would be here for him. After that, she had no choice but to go back under her canvas and fall back into a sleep induced by exhaustion. A few hours later she was awakened by his nose in her face, grunting to be fed.
That year sent ice storms, and floods, and in the "dry" season. Helena would take him under her tarp and hold him against her to stop him from shivering whenever the ice fell. And Smoky would stand there on the windward side of them both during storm, after storm, after storm ... . As the winds howled like the wraiths of hungry, circling wolves, lightning lashed at the skies like the whips of some unrelenting ghost riders, trying to gather in a spirit,
that was not their rightful property to claim.
_____ That Was Good. _____ Now give me a BIG KISS!
Date: 07/16/2007
By the time Mystic Sage was 3 or 4 months, he would come running (and "singing" as he ran) to be fed when called, and Helena got to sleep for 4 precious hours at a time.

The bigger they were, the more likely they were to be fast enough to keep up with the little speedster. His favorite sport was trying to run at least one circle around his own sire before the herd could cross the field. Then Wakara would chase after him, and softly nip him on his "cheeky" little rump. It was their favorite game. "Ha! Ha! You can't catch me!"
And by the time he was 5 months old, he was right!
Bright eyes.

Spice was one of the original Ron Roubidoux Sulphurs accepted into the SMR back in '94. Many of her original (Sulphur HMA) papers had been lost, so we had to shave her brand to prove who she was to get a clear BLM title. (cross every "i" - dot every "t" ;-) )The SMR papers were the only ones still with her.
